Tristram Lansdowne’s practice explores representations of organized space, considering the ways in which architecture is used to express desire and control. Through a rigorous and exact approach to watercolour painting, he examines the psycho-spatial content of domestic architectural space, paying particular attention to the effects of globalized design culture and digital rendering technologies. By examining the nature of the architectural ideal, Lansdowne asks what it says about our conceptions of place.
Digressions, (2022-23) a recent series of watercolours, transgress pictorial depth and recessed space by conjoining, framing and obscuring images in unlikely combinations. He is currently working on a sculpture series of life-size architectural columns that uses 3D modelling programs to explore translations between the handmade and the digital, and between image production and architectural space.
Tristram Lansdowne is based in Toronto. He holds an MFA from the Rhode Island School of Design (2016) and a BFA from the Ontario College of Art & Design (2007). His work has been exhibited in museums and galleries across North America and Europe, and can be found in public collections including the National Gallery of Canada.
