Digressions

September 17 – October 29 2022

Luis De Jesus Los Angeles

Digressions, exhibited at Luis de Jesus Gallery in Los Angeles in 2022, presents ten intimately rendered trompe-l’oeil paintings that rely on successive, internal framing strategies. By juxtaposing seemingly disparate images, often with their edges exposed, these works create a virtual vortex of competing spaces that pulled the viewer in. Guided by a strategy of loose association and visual rhymes, and referencing canonical uses of artificial space within art history – the murals of Pompeii, Jan van Eyck’s altarpieces, American neoclassicism, and early surrealism – Lansdowne builds tactile and visual connections that tap into the slippages and pile ups that occur inadvertently as we immerse ourselves in the image commons.
